Homeschooling for the Rest of Us

I am so incredibly excited about this book!  For years, I have been talking with fellow homeschoolers about the main stresses of homeschool families…  One theme that came up repeatedly is “perfection.”  Higher expectations are placed on homeschoolers from society – relatives, friends, educators, society in general.  Even the parents themselves tend to place such high expectations on themselves that when things don’t go quite as planned, they become frustrated.

I respect families that seem to “have it all together.”  There have been times when others have thought this about my family, but in reality, there are many days when I look around and wonder if my house will ever be clean, when we’ll make time to do those science experiments, or how I can encourage the children to become best friends.   In reality, it’s likely that other families who seem to “have it all together” face the same struggles and challenges as you.

In Homeschooling for the Rest of Us, readers will discover that there is no perfect homeschool family, child, curriculum, schedule, or discipline method.  In addition to anecdotes from our own family, there are stories and interviews from other imperfect homeschoolers.  Readers will find helpful suggestions, discover new ideas, laugh at the stories of others, mourn with those who have suffered, and all the while continue to develop their own homeschool philosophies.  This book is about helping homeschoolers create a path of their own amidst the maze of home education options, the stresses they’ll encounter over the years and the pressures that will placed upon them from the moment they begin to consider homeschooling their children.

Homeschooling for the Rest of Us was released in January 2010.  You can order at the Bethany House web page, Amazon, or just about any place books are sold.  Don't be afraid to ask your library to carry a copy of the book!  They're usually happy to cater to homeschoolers and I'm sure other families will appreciate it, too.
